As a special segment of the Hungarian labor market is the agribusiness (agriculture and food industry and trade) sector. While in 1990, 18.99 percent of the nearly 4.9 million of the total workforces in Hungary were employed in the agribusiness, of which 693 thousand were in agriculture and 234 thousand in the food industry, compared to nearly 7 percent of the total Hungarian workforce in 2019 before the current crisis.
Today, the entire domestic labor market, including the agribusiness sector, is affected in a wide variety of ways. We are thinking here of the three great challenges of the last two years; the coronavirus crisis, the effects of recovery and growth, and last but not least, the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. In addition to these challenges, it is worth paying attention to:
- Agri-business digitalization, globalization and demographic change
- Education and its transitions in the labor market
- Agriculture 4.0 - Workers and jobs of the future
- Sustainable labor market policies, sustainable corporate governance and HR strategies in all sectors of our economy.
- The labor market effects of the green economy.
Mission
The main elements of the mission of the Agricultural Labor Market Research Group are the following:
- Intending to serve as a bridge between economics and human management education in agriculture and related industries
- Planning to conduct our research with the need for complexity, we compare the labor market situation of agricultural and related industries with the situation of other sectors and industries using the similarity and difference search method.
Goals
As a result of the establishment of the research group, we plan to achieve the following main goals:
- Facilitating development of a labor market management knowledge base for special agricultural and related industries in Hungary and the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region (research reports, theory studies, case studies, curricula, etc.).
- Preparing expert and consulting documents and labor market forecasts for university decision-makers to renew the content of academic training and development.
- Supporting work of our narrower and wider CEE region, as well as agricultural and related companies and institutions operating in several countries, with our special training, further training and consulting services.
